Red ants are not a group of ants, or a type of ant, but simply a color of ant.  They are mostly mistaken for the notorious Fire ant, red ants come as many different types of ants in many different shapes and sizes.  Most ants come in the color either red or black, with the main red ant being the fire ant, and the most well known black ant being the  carpenter ant.  The color does not represent its danger level, aggression or truly anything for that matter, but since any ant can be a problem then it truly is not important.  Some other red ants would be the enormous Bull ant, the dangerous jack jumper ant, and the infamous African driver ant.  All of the ants have different characteristics and abilities but what they all have in common, is their primary color, the color of danger.

Fire ants

Fire ants are a dangerous type of ant that is found mostly throughout the southern states of America.  These pests are annoying and dangerous in that they not only contaminate food and run around our houses, but they also have powerful stings that can be life threatening to those who are allergic.  Fired ants received their names from the stings that they administer, as the feeling they give off is said to be the same feeling as one gets when getting burned.  Because of their persistence and ability, fire ants have become well known throughout the world and are the common name called for most red ants that people see.

Other red ants

Bull ants are large and powerful red ants that are found in Australia. They are known for their dangerous sting, that much like a fire ant can be lethal if you are allergic to it.  Bull ants are extremely aggressive and will even attack humans if they are bothered by them.  This may be an extension of their fierce will to live, which can be explained through an experiment done when the ants were first discovered, which claims that if a bull ant is pulled in two, the two parts will actually start fighting each other to survive.  Driver ants are also very aggressive ants that live in Africa.  They are what I like to call nomadic ants because they do not build permanent nest but only temporary ones that they stay in for only a few days two at most three months.  Driver ants have some of the largest colonies of ants recorded at being over 20 million individuals large.  This enormous size is broken down into two different types of ants; the smaller worker ants and the large and dangerous soldier ants.  These soldier ants have larger heads and stronger mandibles than the workers are protect the workers while they are moving.  These ants have the ability to sting but rarely do and mostly rely on their powerful bites to take down prey.  The soldier’s bites are powerful even in human standards, being able to puncture the skin and hold on even after being ripped in two.  These ants can also be dangerous to humans and should be avoided at all costs. Be sure to protect yourself from the menace of ants with products such as ant bait and ant traps.
