Commissioned by the sixth Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb, the Badshahi Mosque or the “Kings Mosque” is a correct depiction of the grandeur and beauty of Mughal architecture. Built in the commemoration of the Lahore Resolution, the Minare Pakistan is a tall, monumental minaret located in Iqbal Park. This historical monument reflects the demand of the Muslims of the subcontinent to make a separate Islamic homeland in the shape of the nation of Pakistan. This is known as the Lahore Resolution. This minaret reflects a blend of modern and Mughal architecture and provides a panoramic view of the bustling city.
3. Old Lahore
Old Lahore is the name given to the section of Lahore that was fortified by a city wall during the Mughal era. Old Lahore is also known as the Walled City of Lahore. The Walled City originally had 13 gates of entry out of which only 6 remain today. Some of the popular gates include Akbari Gate, Bhati Gate, Delhi Gate, Kashmiri Gate and Roshnai Gate. The bustling intertwined streets, narrow alleys and dilapidated houses are a side to behold. These gates serve as the entry point to the treasure trove of tourist attractions present in Lahore including the historical Lahore Fort, the Badshahi Mosque, Wazir Khan Mosque, Data Darbar and the many havelis are reminiscent of Mughal and Sikh architecture.
4. Shalamar Gardens The Shalamar Gardens were built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1641.These Persian gardens are surrounded by an intricately carved brick wall and form an oblong parallelogram. With its cosmic gardens, three tier terraces, multitude fountains and an assortment of fruit trees, the Shalamar Gardens were included in UNESCO’s World Heritage Site in 1972.
5. Shahi Qila (Lahore Fort)
No trip to Lahore would be complete without a visit to the Shahi Qila. This monument is located at the north western corner of the Walled City. The origin of this historic fort can be traced as far back as 800 BC. The base structure of the citadel was built in the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar. Based on the rich architectural designs of the Mughals, the Lahore Fort is home to the famous Sheesh Mahal, Alamgiri Gate, Naulakha Pavillion and Motti Masjid all major tourist attractions. For its captivating beauty and architectural incomparability, the Lahore Fort was included in UNESCOS World Heritage Site.
